![]() ![]() The Mutiny took the field in 1996 when MLS began play. The region was seen as a potentially fertile market for soccer due to the success of the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the old North American Soccer League in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1994, newly established Major League Soccer announced it would place one of its charter franchises in the Tampa Bay Area. Owing to these issues, MLS attempted without success to find a local ownership group to take over operations from the league, and both the Mutiny and the league's other Florida-based team, the Miami Fusion, were folded before the 2002 season. However, in subsequent years, dropping attendance and revenues became problems, especially as their on-field success declined and the lease at their second home pitch of Raymond James Stadium removed sources of gameday revenues. They were successful in their first years of play, winning the first MLS Supporters' Shield behind MLS MVP Carlos Valderrama and high-scoring forward Roy Lassiter, whose 27 goals in 1996 remained the MLS single-season record until 2018. The Mutiny were established in 1994 and were owned and operated by MLS throughout their entire existence. They played their home games at Tampa Stadium and then at Raymond James Stadium. They were a charter member of Major League Soccer (MLS) and played from 1996 to 2001. One of StoppinHO’s favourites from the archives (archtivistives).Tampa Bay Mutiny was a professional soccer team based in Tampa, Florida. when you wear this, it literally falls off ya! Very comfy thou! I should also mention that its a nike shirt, and like most Nike clothing of the time, it was massive. To this day the MLS logo has remained the same, and i respect that. ![]() I presume a Devil Ray is a proper hunting fish and not a comic book made up character for the purpose of a logo. i was watching the tampa bay Devil Rays….it made sense…its a Devil Ray….or some other Marine animal that has the ability to kill within seconds, a la Steve Irwin and that Stingray. But i was watching the MLB Baseball a few years ago and it hit me…. I was expecting a Pirate or the Cutty Sark. i have wonder what on earth it was for years. ![]() the only reason i can think is to help build the brand and logo. ![]() The MLS in its inception years had all sides not wear sponsors logos. Many spurs shirts were the same! the most striking thing for me was the tampa bay mutiny logo on the front. everything from the design, shirt size, material, printing, its all there!Įverything bar the crest is printed into the fabric. It really is a throwback to the late 90’s. From 2001-2002 the Mutiny became the “Miami Fusion” before ceasing to exist in 2002.īut. The Glazers of Man U fame, were considered, as they owned the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but chose against it. MLS owned the franchise, but after low revenue and crowds, they looked to find an ownwer. The Mutiny played in the MLS as an expansion team from 1997-2001, hot off the 1994 World Cup. What a player he was! And importantly, i knew he played for the Mutiny. Every Saturday used to be a football dream….shows, champions league, interviews, profiles…etc… One of those profiles was for one of my favourite players, the Colombian Fuzzball Carlos Valderrama. I knew of the Tampa Bay Mutiny, via the SBS channel in Australia. One shirt amongst others (and there were some beauties) caught my eye, and it was the Tampa Bay Mutiny shirt. This place caught my eye as it had high windows filled with football shirts. After a long bus ride, i decided to alight the Greyhound bus and check out a sports store i saw as we were pulling into the depot. In particular a very hot and humid Tampa Bay, in Florida. I have been to many places and visited many cities, but in 1997 i found myself touring America. ![]()
